Yesterday I shared a little about the inspiration and design process Mike and I typically use on our DIY home projects. Today I thought I would share a unique process we did for our greenhouse/studio (referred to as the “mini house” by our Grandsons). We had all the typical steps with our house and windows as the inspiration shot and Mike drawing up his normal plans and take off list. I decided I wanted to reverse the colours and wanted a nice covered sitting area up front. I wanted our greenhouse to look like it belonged on our property however also had its own identity. Mike wasn’t sure it would look right. You will never guess??? Swipe to picture 2 and you will see the actual cardboard model he made to try and decide if all would look okay! A real mini house..... pictures 3 and 4 are of the inside sitting area and sleeping loft. We are on to the next project here at Five Blocks North above our washer and dryer in our laundry room (who doesn’t need more storage). First pic has my favourite carpenter/handyman husband working the plan. The front cupboard doors for these shelves will be made from the (cut in half) solid old panel door sitting in front of the washer and dryer in this pic and they will be painted black (marble actually). Second picture shows some decent progress in two days by that handyman of mine. Mike and I have done several projects together and I thought I should outline what our typical process is. It all starts with an “inspiration shot” which I find for Mike. The third picture here is our Laundry room “inspiration shot” from @southernlivingmag an article I saved from 2018. Then Mike goes to his drafting table and draws a detailed plan complete with measurements. (He even uses pencil crayons to get the actual and planned colours just right) yes our washer and dryer are red! Then he does a take off plan for the items he needs to purchase and off to the lumber store he goes. I then often go to @leevalleytools to source the perfect handles as I did here in the 5th picture. Well the inside is done! Yes our new wine/cold cellar here at Five Blocks North is ready to have her shelves stocked with dry goods and wine. My creative/handy husband has done it..... he came up with the idea to build this where an old water cistern once was. He gave the insulated walls an old stone look by using his router to carve out the grout and then he painted the individual stones using different left over paints we had. Then he painted all the grout and the floor. He made the ceiling and the shelving out of cedar. What a heavenly smell in this room! The French doors were built using glass he had. The only purchases we made for this beauty were the cedar and the wood for the doors. My favourite carpenter (husband named Mike) here at Five Blocks North is working hard on completing our wine/cold cellar in the old water cistern area of our basement. He now has finished the stone look walk, the cedar ceiling and is now putting in cedar shelving for storing food and wine. Love the smell of that cedar in there! During our 14 day self isolation after returning from the US I spent time on line looking for seeds that we could begin planting in our greenhouse. I called Eising Greenhouse to see if they could deliver some to me. I spoke with Lisa as I also wanted to begin growing sprouts for the first time. She was extremely helpful and directed me to this sprout jar and this blend of sprouts. Our pantry/sunroom getting ready for Christmas. I love this wreath, it is so soft and hardly there. I had it on our front door two years ago and the birds decided the elements in it would make a great nest once spring came. I had it redone (slightly different) and now it will always be an inside wreath!
